Dior Couture 26’ was a structural fantasy and editorial dream

Jonathan Anderson made the avant-garde soft and beautiful, blending bold shapes with feather-light materials for his debut Dior couture collection. The couture runways are where the skilled artisans of the Dior team showcase their craft, showing us how blurred the lines between fashion and art can be. The creative minds at Dior filled the runways with delicate flora and fauna details, adding depth to the beautiful garments shown, transporting us to Jardin Dior presenting Spring time through Jonathan’s eyes.

The Flora & The Fauna

The collection, being Spring-Summer couture, displayed a beautiful assortment of floral motifs, from intricate petal details on dresses to unique bouquet headpieces and bags. Florals were also felt metaphorically through the show’s colour palette of blush rose, lavender, moss and fern.

While flora was the dominating aesthetic motif, bits of fauna could be seen sprinkled throughout. Feathers adorned trousers, scales glistened on clutches and exotic skins covered coats, immersing the audience in the natural world.

The way Anderson plays with shape, material, and proportion while emphasising motifs and creating depth makes for a dreamy user experience, with the most warming part being the overall elegance of his designs. 

Materials included knits, silks, furs and feathers, forming a rich tactile experience for sensory indulgence. One of the beauties of Couture is its imaginative and transformative approach to garment making. It is made to transport you to a new world, to a new season, where you can get lost in the fantasy of fashion, and the Dior Couture 26 collection did just that.

The ceiling of florals, reflected off mirrored walls and floors, added to the collection’s dreaminess, engulfing the audience in a metaphorical Dior garden.

Jardin Dior

Mixed among the florals were subtle tuxedo elements and references to his first collection. A through line tied together with the bow motif as seen on the hems of the first three opening looks, which were an assorted variety of his creative genius.

The bar jacket transformed into a bar coat and made its way down the runway in smooth, shiny leather and shiny exotic skin, presenting options. What lacked colour was covered with texture, and what was void of texture was dominated by shape. This show was unpredictable in the best way.

I wondered what was next as my eyes feasted on what came before.

Dior is a house known for its feminine approach to design. There is a delicate dance each season as collections sashay down the runways. This couture debut had a firmness, and a boldness that complemented the softness presented through design. The unusual silhouettes redefined elegance, projecting and injecting nuance into fashion. Jonathan Anderson’s Dior couture debut was a masterful spectacle and feast for the sartorial senses.
